X7 Diagnostics Report

If your X7 is not working as expected and you have been unable to resolve the issues after following the steps outlined in our X7 Troubleshooting article, you will then need to create a diagnostics report as outlined below that can be review by our Trimble support team partners to help resolve your issues.

In order for fully understand the issues you are experiencing we will need all of the steps outlined below to be completed and the information collected from these steps can be uploaded to a Support Case via our support form.

Step 1: Serial Numbers and Firmware Versions

Record the Serial Numbers of your hardware, both the X7 and Tablet that is shown on the actual units.

Inside of FieldLink go to the More menu and then the About section to retrieve the following:
1) The version of FieldLink being run on the tablet
2) The X7 firmware version

Step 2: Diagnostic Report

Connect the tablet to the X7
In FieldLink go to Device / Settings / Diagnostic
Select the Diagnostic button

Note: The X7 will begin spinning and the yellow lights will flash on the unit. Do Not touch or attempt to move the X7 while it is moving.

The diagnostic report will appear on the tablet once the lights on the X7 turn green
At this point the report will be saved to the default location below or it can be saved to another location.
Default Report save location on the tablet hard drive: Users/’USERNAME”/Documents/FieldLink/Reports

For more detailed information on creating the diagnostic report you can refer to the latest FieldLink user guide and section 9.11 Scan Export and Diagnostic Report.

Step 3: Calibration Report

Connect the tablet to the X7
In FieldLink go to Device/Settings/Calibration Report
Select the Calibration button

Note: The X7 will begin spinning and the yellow lights will flash on the unit. Do Not touch or attempt to move the X7 while it is moving.

The calibration report will appear on the tablet once the lights on the X7 turn green
At this point the report will be saved to the default location below or it can be saved to another location.
Default Report save location on the tablet hard drive: Users/’USERNAME”/Documents/FieldLink/Reports

Step 4: Emergencylog.zip Files

Perform a scan with the X7
Hold the scanner power button down for roughly 10 seconds
3 beeps should be heard and then the X7 lights will flash orange
After the lights change color wait at least 10 second for the log files to be created and written to the internal SD card

Take the SD card out of the scanner after powering it down.
Insert the SD card in a card reader on your computer or connected to the tablet and copy the “emergencylog.zip” form the card to you hard drive.

Step 5: Send files to our Support Team

Go to the BuildingPoint Support Case form page and submit a case.
Attach the Reports and Log files outlined above to your form using the integrated file upload feature.

You will be contacted by our Support Team after you submit the support case.

X7 Troubleshooting Steps

If you are having issues with your X7 not completing a start-up or scanning correctly please review the steps below to troubleshoot the issues you are experiencing.

Step 1: Check the SD Card

If the X7 scanner is not functioning correctly a lot of times it can be an issue with the formatting of the SD card.

The preferred card to use with the X7 is the same type of card that comes with the scanner originally and that’s the SDHC, 23GB, Class 10, UHS-I, U3 SD card.

The scanner will also work with a SDXC, 32GB-2TB, Class 10, USH-I, U3 card.

For reference purposes on the label of the SD Card:
Speed Class is represented by a number inside of a C
UHS Speed Class is represented by a Number in a U
The UHS Bus Class is represented by roman numeral

The SDUC, 2TB-128TB has not been tested with the X7 and is not approved for use with the unit.

The SDXC card requires a 3rd party application to format it to FAT32 to run correctly with the X7. For information on formatting the SD card for use with an X7 please see this article that walks through a couple of 3rd party applications that you can use and the process of formatting the card to FAT32.
SD Card Formatting Article

If you are using the above referenced correct SD card types and you are still having issues you can try re-formatting the SD card as FAT32 even if it’s already formatted correctly. Make sure before you re-format the card you save any data on the card as the re-formatting process will erase everything on the card. See the article mentioned above for re-formatting instructions.

Step 2: Check the X7 Firmware

One quick check to do if you are having issues with your X7 is to make sure the firmware on the unit matches the version of FieldLink you are running on the tablet. Below is a list of the FieldLink versions and their corresponding X7 firmware versions.

FieldLink VersionX7 Firmware Version
v5.7R2.1.4
v5.8R2.1.11
v5.9R2.1.205
v6.0R2.2.013
v6.1 & v6.2R2.3.22 or R.3.100
v6.3 – v6.5R2.4.102
v6.6R2.5.100

If the steps above do not resolve your X7 issues be sure to contact our support team through our Support Case form.

X7 start up calibration error

ISSUE: When starting the X7 the unit will run a self calibration test. At start up if there is an error during this start up calibration you will get an error report and you will not be able to scan anything.

SOLUTION: One solution to this error is to simply clean the protective lens cover for the internal mirrors. If this lens is dirty the unit will not be able to self calibrate correctly and it can also creates issues with your scan data if it does calibrate but still has particles on it.

RECOMMENDATION: To clean the lens be sure to use a Micorfiber type cloth only. Be sure not to use any cloth that might scratch the lens when you clean it including paper towels. Do not use any cleaning solutions or other liquids to clean the lens. You can use a compressed air can that are commonly used with electronics.

If you are still having issues with the unit after cleaning the lens please submit a support case via the form on our site and one of support team members will follow-up with you.

Scanning Memory Cards – SDHC vs SDXC

What’s the right memory card for use with an X7?

With the purchase of every X7 you are given a 32GB SDHC memory card. This card by default is formatted to the FAT32 file system. This system is needed for the scans to be viewed by the X7 correctly.

For any SD card it’s recommended that you have a 32GB size as a minimum and that the card is a class 10 speed and temperature ranging from -20°C to 85°C.

A SDXC card can be used in the X7 but it will need to be formatted in the FAT32 file system. Below are a couple of different methods for formatting the card.

The methods below have been taken from the following websites where you can find more detailed information about SDXC cards and the steps shown below plus software that makes it easy to partition drives.

EaseUS
Recoverit
AOMEI Partition Assistant

Here’s an additional 3rd party formatting option that can be downloaded to format a SDXC card
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/

X7 Diagnostic Report

If you want to see the current diagnostic status on the X7 you can run a self diagnostic report directly on the unit.

X7: Station Connections Color Changed

After deleting a scan station inside of Trimble Field Link, the colors connecting the stations changed to (in this instance) green to red/yellow

The color of the connections is based upon which scan in the group is considered the reference station.

In this instance, green was the color of scan station #1 and station #12 was red/yellow which became the reference station after scan station #1 was deleted. The color red/yellow indicated appeared as a warning or error when in reality it was just the color scheme.
