How Does a Robotic Total Station Work?

A robotic total station is operated remotely, using a controller that tells the telescope how to move. It can move in every direction, up to 360 degrees horizontally and vertically. It can also tilt.

It can also share measurements such as angle and distance data to the pole end. This allows you to measure for surveys and set out points without needing to return to the instrument for guidance.

Why Is a Robotic Total Station Better than a Mechanical Total Station?

There are a number of advantages to using robotic total stations. When paired with a tablet they only need one person to operate them, unlike mechanical total stations which need two. This frees up labour for other tasks, as well as making it quicker to carry out surveying. Furthermore, the operator does not have to stay by the station at all times, giving them more chances to move about and spot any issues in advance.

Using a robotic total station will also speed up your processes. Trimble estimates you can set out around 150 points per day with a mechanical total station. In comparison, you can set out anything from 600 to 1000 points in that same timeframe using a robotic one.

This makes a significant reduction to the cost per point, saving you a lot of time and money.

How Accurate Is a Robotic Total Station?

The exact accuracy of a robotic total station will depend on the model. However, in general, most Trimble robotic total stations have an accuracy of around 1-2 millimetres.

As their telescopes have such a wide range of movement, you can get a much higher level of accuracy with them than you would with a mechanical station.
